Casual Fridays

I've decided that Fridays will be dedicated to posting about whatever tickles my fancy.  No rhyme or reason to it.  You might get snippets from my week, a quote I love, a song I've been jamming to, other blog posts I found interesting....anything.  So if that's not for you, skip it and we'll get back to discussing books on Monday.

First of all, this:

Feel free to listen to it as you peruse the rest of this post.  You're welcome.

Got to take a much-needed coffee break with THIS GIRL in the middle of a day of driving to Tallahassee and back. Love her!

And while you're looking at this photo, check that sweet necklace I'm rocking.  It's from a company I love called Trades of Hope.  Check them out.  Read their mission statement.  Do some shopping.  Seriously.

I saw this on a church sign in Tallahassee:
"True happiness is knowing that God is good."
Right?!  Can I get an "Amen!"?  Thanks.

Um, this may be the sweetest video I've ever seen in my life.  Happy Valentine's Weekend to you.

Link Love

-Dear Justice Kennedy (uh-oh, it just got political in here, y'all)

-The Reality of a 50 Shades Relationship (This is probably the best and most practical thing I've read in regards to the whole 50 Shades drama going on.)

-What Your Wife Wants You To Know About V-Day (Late entry, but YES!  It's true.)

That's it for this week.  If you're reading this, I hope you have a sickeningly sweet Valentine's Day! ;)

  1. Ok, this is why we're best friends. First of all, I've been rocking the same song. But why is he only gonna love her until they're 70? I mean, with life spans increasing the way they are, it's completely practical to expect to live to 90 or 95. Unless Ed is fully planning on trolling around nursing homes looking for a good time after he hits that Mile marker. Or unless he's psychic and already knows he and his girl are gonna die in a freak accident on her 70th birthday. Either way, way to kill the mood. Apparently eternal love isn't alive and well anymore?

Also, I read the 50 shades blog post, and I'm so glad you shared it. Glamorizing sexual violence by putting it in a romantic context... that's a whole new level of perversion in this day and age.

    1. Right? And why does he say it like "seven-tee"? I mean, if you're not listening you'd think he was saying seventeen, and that just doesn't even make sense.

And yes. I don't understand why the books and this movie have taken off like they have. But then again, I didn't understand the Twilight phenomenon either. Depravity of man, I guess. So, so sad.

    2. it's only fair to mention that your first picture is only true of movies that are adapted from books, obviously.

      malia is the coolest.

that video of boys being asked to smack girls. good parents.

all those blog posts are on point, but i don't get the craze (on either side) about 50 shades of boring. bdsm is a thing, it's been a thing, and if you want to watch an actually compelling film about abusive relationships, watch "secretary" or "kelly + victor", the list goes on.

big fan of the blog, Hannah. keep it up!

    3. First, valid point. I love me a good movie. I just thought that picture was so beyond appropriate for this blog.

Second, yes she is. She's the coolest college kid ever.

And last, I find it so crazy that we teach little boys never to hit girls (which I believe is absolutely RIGHT ON), but then glorify 50 Shades of Grey. And I think all the craze surrounding 50 Shades is how it is promoting BDSM. Obviously BDSM has been around, but until now, I don't think the public at large--particularly women--would advocate FOR it. I don't know anything about Secretary or Kelly + Victor, and in fairness, I really don't know all that much about 50 Shades (I just can't get away from it, it's freakin' everywhere), but do they portray BDSM as sexy?

    1. Eh, he's hit or miss for me (it's probably that red hair), but I love this song.

  3. based on what i've read, on one side, you've got the public going crazy over the "sexy" bdsm angle (which, again, has been happening behind closed doors forever, and has been done on film--and better--many, many times)

on the other side, you've got people upset about the abuse the male character puts the female heroine through outisde of the bedroom (which, again, watch "secretary" or ANY OTHER film about abusive "sexual" relationships to get a much more compelling, visceral look at how those relationships tear people down).

"secretary" and "kelly + victor" does NOT portray bdsm as sexy at all. they're very dark, thought-provoking films. great, if somewhat troubling, stuff.

all that said, i don't understand the craze or outrage about bdsm, either. that's a choice you and your partner make in the privacy of your own home. if two consenting adults are doing consensual things, who cares what gets you off, you know?

    1. Eh, I'd have to disagree with you on the whole consensual point. As a Christian, I would argue that it's absolutely wrong solely based on the fact that love is patient, kind and gentle (1 Corinthians 13). For non-Christians, I think it's a slippery slope and more often than not, has the potential to turn into the situations discussed in the article I linked: death or women ending up in shelters or hiding from an abusive partner. That being said, I understand that BDSM is going to continue, and I don't expect non-Christians to agree with my Christian perspective on the subject. I mean, I think any person is off his or her rocker to consent to being subjected to pain, but hey, that's just me. ;)

    2. Also, I just want to note that this is exactly the type of conversation I wanted to provoke by authoring a blog. So once again, you're the best for commenting. Thanks for going there with me.

  4. I can see both of your sides on the whole BDSM issue. I think what happens behind closed doors within a marriage is between two consenting adults, HOWEVER, that does skirt the line between safety and abuse for the woman. It does involve a lot of trust between the partners, and despite how it's portrayed, there will always be more power on the side of the man than the woman. Since love is patient, kind, and gentle, how would BDSM fit into that mold? Doesn't it make sex more about the flesh desires of the participants and not about fostering intimacy or glorifying God?

  5. I think it's worth mentioning that there are a LOT of BDSM sexual relationships out there where the MEN are the submissives. And I would argue that different couples foster intimacy in different ways, yes? As for the application of Scripture, that's a really good point, but of course not something everyone will take into consideration.

But I, personally, do agree that to enter into the "realm" of BDSM in the bedroom requires trust, thought, and the acknowledgement of where such behavior can lead outside of the bedroom.

Hannah--GREAT platform for civil conversation. This is fun!

    1. I think what Christina was getting at is that no matter if the man agrees to be the submissive, he physically is stronger and could overpower the woman if he wanted. I don't necessarily think that is always the case, especially since if he is really bound, there's not much he could do about it. I still stick to my comment that I think any person--male or female--consenting to physical abuse, sexually or otherwise, is bat-crazy.

Also, I just found out that I'm gonna be back up to Tally soon (read: sometime before May) to authenticate more paperwork. We'll have to catch another coffee break if we can! Love you, girl!
